How do we help our child choose between university and an apprenticeship?

“How do we help our child choose between university and an apprenticeship?"

This is one of the biggest decisions families face today. The right answer depends on the individual, not trends.

Why this decision has become harder

Apprenticeships have grown in popularity because they offer:

  • Real work experience and a fast start to a career

  • Salary – you earn while you learn

  • No tuition fees – all apprenticeship fees are covered by the employer

  • Strong career pathways.

However, there aren’t enough apprenticeships for the demand which makes them extremely competitive – typical acceptance rates are lower than 10%.

University on the other hand has an acceptance rate of around 75% and still offers:

  • Flexibility and fun

  • Broader learning including social and organisational skills

  • Time to mature and learn to live away from home

  • Access to certain professions that require a degree.

Key Factors to consider

1.     Finances and student debt.

University is expensive for both students (and their parents). The average student debt coming out of university is now £53k – which is not a small financial decision.

2. Learning style

Does your child prefer practical, hands-on learning? Or academic study and theory?

3. Career clarity

Apprenticeships suit young people who are motivated to work hard.

Officially, apprenticeships are 80% work and 20% study time, but students often report having to do study in evenings and weekends to get through the academic side of apprenticeships.

University suits those who want to explore University life and need time to mature and develop.

4. Confidence and independence

The workplace can be demanding. Some young people benefit from the structured environment of university first.

5. Competitiveness

Apprenticeships at all levels are more competitive than leading universities. Early preparation, determination and resilience to the rejections are essential.

The Most Successful Approach

Many families now keep both options open. Applying to both provides flexibility and reduces pressure and increases choice.

Some young people choose to take a gap year when applying to apprenticeships, so they aren’t also juggling A level revision and school responsibilities.

The recruitment processes are time consuming and full on!

Common questions

Are apprenticeships more competitive than university?

Yes apprenticeships - especially degree level apprenticeships – are more competitive than getting into even the top universities, so preparation is essential.

Can my child apply for both?

Yes. Many families keep both options open to maximise choice.

What if they change their mind later?

Career paths are flexible. Many people change direction several times as they gain experience and self-awareness.

Which option leads to higher earning potential?

Both can lead to strong outcomes depending on the individual, industry and effort. It really depends on what degree and apprenticeship route you take, but often the faster start an apprenticeship offers will be more financially beneficial as you aren’t accumulating debt.

How early should we start preparing?

Ideally from Year 10 or Year 11 to build work experience, skills and confidence. This is also a good time to use tools like Morrisby to understand your aptitude, interests and personality to research and narrow down career ideas.

Unfortunately, academic success will not be enough to land an apprenticeship - employers are looking for skills such as problem solving, adaptability, digital skills and communication.
