Thinking about doing an apprenticeship but unsure what all the levels mean? You're not alone. With options ranging from Level 2 all the way up to Level 7, it can feel a bit confusing. So let’s break it down simply.
Apprenticeship levels in England are aligned with academic qualifications. They range from entry-level (equivalent to GCSEs) up to postgraduate degrees.
Here’s a quick overview:
Level 2: Foundation & Intermediate Apprenticeships
These roles build basic workplace skills and are a brilliant starting point if you don’t have much experience yet.
Equivalent to 5 GCSEs (grades 9-4)
Ideal for school leavers aged 16+
Great first step into the world of work
Typical duration: 8-18 months
Level 3: Advanced Apprenticeships
Many young people use advanced apprenticeships as a stepping stone to higher qualifications or roles.
Equivalent to A-levels or T Levels
Suitable if you’ve already done GCSEs or another Level 2 apprenticeship
Ideal for building specific skills in your chosen field
Typical duration: 18-24 months
Level 4 & 5: Higher Apprenticeships
These apprenticeships often lead to supervisory or specialist roles.
Equivalent to the first years of university (HNC, HND, foundation degrees)
For those who want to earn while learning at a more advanced level
Typical duration: 18-36 months
Level 6 & 7: Degree Apprenticeships
You’ll graduate with a full degree and several years of real-world experience – no student loans required.
Level 6 = Full bachelor's degree
Level 7 = Master’s degree
Delivered in partnership with a university
Ideal for ambitious candidates who want to avoid student debt
Duration: 3-6 years depending on the programme
From August 2025, Foundation Apprenticeships will be introduced:
Aimed at those aged 16-21 (or up to 24 if care-experienced or with an Education, Health and Care plan)
Minimum duration of 8 months
Designed to support progression to higher levels
This gives even more young people a supported route into the workplace.
From January 2026, Level 7 apprenticeships will only be government-funded if you’re under 22 at the start of your Master’s programme — unless you’re a care leaver or have an EHC plan, in which case funding extends to age 24.
The right level for you depends on:
Your current qualifications
Your age and experience
The job role you're applying for
Not sure what fits best? Your training provider or a careers advisor/coach can guide you through it.
Absolutely. Apprenticeships are stackable. You can:
Start with Level 2 and work your way up
Change sectors later in your career and retrain
They’re a flexible and practical way to build a career on your terms.
